Want to speed up Internet Explorer?
For those who rely on dial up service or those who would prefer internet pages to open more quickly, there is a setting in Internet Explorer which will prevent pictures from being downloaded. For instance, when I read newspaper articles, I would rather not have an article's accompanying pictures be downloaded, The result is that pages open more quickly. Of course if you have someone sighted in your household using the same computer, they might not appreciate it. If you would like to try this for yourself, here are the steps:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Open the Tools menu by pressing "Alt T".
3. Press "O", then press enter to open the Options Dialogue pages. You are placed in the General Options page.
4. Press "Control Tab" six times to move from page to page of the Options settings. This will open up the Advanced settings page. With each press of "Control Tab", as you move from page to page you will here, Security page, Privacy page, Content page, Connections page, Programs page, and finally Advanced page.
5. The cursor will be placed at the top of a tree view of a long list of advanced options. These options can be turned on and off by pressing the "space bar". Move down the list of options by pressing the down arrow.
6. The number of options in the list depends on which version of Internet Explorer you are running. In version 7, press the "down arrow" 48 times, in Internet Explorer version 6 it might be a few less presses of the "down arrow", but what you are listening for is the option "Show Pictures". If the option is on you will here "show pictures - on". Press the "Space bar: to toggle the setting off. What you should then hear is "show pictures - off".
7. After having toggled the setting from on to off, press the "Tab" 3 times to "OK".
8. Press the "Enter" or "Space bar" to accept and save the settings. The options are then closed and display is returned to the web page, and that's it.
